Validity of Washington Driver’s License as Federally-Accepted ID Extended for One Year

On April 27, 2020, the final rule was published delaying enforcement of the REAL ID Act’s prohibition on ID’s that do not contain certain information being accepted on the federal level.  Washington state’s driver’s licenses, among those of some other states, do not comply with the requirements of the REAL ID Act, and therefore were set to be invalid forms of ID for many purposes including air travel effective October 1, 2020.  Many people have been rushing to obtain compliant Washington ID’s.  The new rule extends the validity of Washington ID’s for another year.  Those who do not have REAL ID-compliant cards can now continue to use them until October 1, 2021.
